10kg goal, broken into 5 stepping stones of 2kg with 1 new habit each

A 10kg goal, about 1 stone 8lb, is easier to reach when you split it into 5 stepping stones of 2kg and add 1 habit at each stone. A single big number can feel far away. A 2kg target is close enough to picture, and each new habit makes the next stone easier.
A coach at the club looks closely at where you stand and offers the best guidance.

Why stepping stones work
Trying to change everything on day 1 tends to last about a week. Adding 1 habit at a time gives each habit the chance to become automatic before you ask more of yourself. By the 5th stone you are running 5 habits without much thought.
Stone 1, a breakfast you sit down for
Start the day with protein and fibre rather than a coffee on the go. Porridge with yoghurt, eggs on wholemeal toast or a bowl with fruit and seeds. Our guide to the best breakfast to lose weight has more options.
Stone 2, drinks without sugar
Sugary drinks, flavoured lattes and juice add a surprising amount. The NHS explains how to cut down on sugar in your diet, and drinks are usually the easiest place to begin.
Stone 3, a smaller dinner plate
Keep the same foods but serve a little less starch and a little more veg. Half the plate as vegetables is a good rule to aim for.
Stone 4, a daily walk
20 to 30 minutes most days, at a pace where talking is possible but singing is not. The NHS Better Health get active pages have free apps and ideas for beginners. A loop through Kirk Ella or Swanland on a dry evening makes a pleasant start.
Stone 5, a bedtime you keep
Short nights make you hungrier the next day. Aim for a similar bedtime most nights, and see how sleep affects appetite for the reasons why.
When a stone takes longer
Some stones will take 2 weeks, others 5. That is normal and not a sign of failure. Keep the habit, not the deadline. Once you are close to the end, our section on keeping 10kg off for good helps you plan what comes next.
Writing your stones down
Keep a simple note on your phone with your 5 stones, the habit for each and the date you reached it. Looking back after a few months shows how far the small steps have taken you. It also reminds you which habits were the hardest, so you know where to be careful later on.

Your own weight loss curve
Type in your profile and the line redraws immediately.
At the middle pace, 8 kg comes off in about 11 weeks. At the gentlest pace you are looking at about 4 months.
The usual guide for weight loss that lasts is between 500 g and 1 kg per week, which forms the best band on the chart. Keep exceeding 1 kg per week and the body burns muscle nearly as much as fat. That is the striped band.
A rough projection only. Everyone follows their own path and results differ. Your device does the sums and nothing is stored or sent. At 65 or older, see your doctor first.
The way this curve is worked out
The zone tops out at 500 g every week, the gentlest pace, and bottoms out at 1 kg every week, the level where the risk starts.
Early weeks go quicker, largely because of water, and then things level off. After 40, the typical curve flattens gradually as metabolism slows. For similar effort, men tend to shed weight slightly sooner than women.
The journey curve includes flat spells lasting several days and slight regains, just like everyday life. It cannot tell you how yours will go.
These tips are general ones. They do not stand in for medical advice.
