Losing weight in your 30s. Small fixes for crowded weeks, drinks and desk days
Key points

In your 30s, weight tends to creep on through small things that repeat, such as drinks at the weekend, long days at a desk and meals eaten on the run, so small changes that also repeat are what turn it around. Nothing dramatic is needed. You need habits that survive a busy week.

Let’s chat over a free assessment

A coach at the club looks closely at where you stand and offers the best guidance.

Where the extra comes from

This is often the decade of new jobs, mortgages and young children. Sport drops off. Lunch becomes whatever is near the office. Evenings are for catching up, often with a glass in hand. None of it looks like much on its own, but it adds up over months.

The drinks nobody counts

The NHS page on calories in alcohol notes that a standard glass of wine can contain up to 158kcal and a pint of 5% beer up to 222kcal. 3 pints on a Friday in Hull is roughly a meal in liquid form. Try alternating with water, choosing smaller glasses, or keeping 2 nights a week alcohol free.

A lunch that does not come from a meal deal

Bring something 3 days out of 5. Leftovers from last night, a wrap with chicken and salad, a soup with a wholemeal roll. Packed lunches give you control without needing extra time, and they save money too.

Build the plate, not a menu

The NHS 8 tips for healthy eating remain the simplest guide. Base meals on higher fibre starchy foods, eat lots of fruit and veg, include fish, cut down on saturated fat and sugar, and do not skip breakfast. For more ideas, see our guide to high fibre foods.

Moving without a gym membership

Desk days are long. Stand up for phone calls, take the stairs, get off the bus 1 stop early or park at the far end of the car park. A weekend walk over the Humber Bridge with the pushchair counts as much as a session at the gym. Our article on losing weight without the gym has more ideas.

Sleep, the forgotten habit

Late nights and early starts leave you hungrier the next day. Protecting 7 hours most nights helps more than people expect, as we explain in sleep and appetite.

3 habits for a crowded week

  • The same breakfast every weekday, so mornings need no thought.
  • A packed lunch at least 3 times.
  • 2 alcohol free evenings, chosen in advance.

Fitting it in before work

Willerby Nutrition is at 24 Main Street in Willerby, and members can have breakfast at the club on the way to work, with daily follow-up from coaches trained in nutrition. The free assessment looks at your real week, including the busy bits. This article is general advice and is no substitute for seeing your GP if you have a health concern.

Your own weight loss curve

Type in your profile and the line redraws immediately.

You are
Best range, 0.5 to 1 kg per week Too quick, so muscle is lost Median curve The journey, plateaus and regains

At the middle pace, 8 kg comes off in about 11 weeks. At the gentlest pace you are looking at about 4 months.

The usual guide for weight loss that lasts is between 500 g and 1 kg per week, which forms the best band on the chart. Keep exceeding 1 kg per week and the body burns muscle nearly as much as fat. That is the striped band.

A rough projection only. Everyone follows their own path and results differ. Your device does the sums and nothing is stored or sent. At 65 or older, see your doctor first.

The way this curve is worked out

The zone tops out at 500 g every week, the gentlest pace, and bottoms out at 1 kg every week, the level where the risk starts.

Early weeks go quicker, largely because of water, and then things level off. After 40, the typical curve flattens gradually as metabolism slows. For similar effort, men tend to shed weight slightly sooner than women.

The journey curve includes flat spells lasting several days and slight regains, just like everyday life. It cannot tell you how yours will go.

These tips are general ones. They do not stand in for medical advice.
