Weight loss without the gym, for long hours, sore knees and busy family lives
Key points

You can lose weight without a gym membership, because the main lever is what and how much you eat, and that lever stays in your hands even when exercise is difficult. An injury, caring for a relative, long shifts or a simple dislike of sport do not close the door.

Let’s chat over a free assessment

Food does the heavy lifting

Dropping a daily pastry or sugary drink often saves more energy than a half hour walk burns. That is why changes on the plate usually make a bigger difference than extra activity. Exercise brings many benefits of its own, but for weight, the kitchen comes first. Portion size, sugary drinks and evening snacks are the 3 places to look before anything else.

Read the front of the pack

The NHS guide on how to read food labels explains the traffic light system. A food is high in fat above 17.5g per 100g, high in sugars above 22.5g and high in salt above 1.5g. Choosing more greens and ambers in the trolley is an easy weekly habit that needs no trainers. Compare 2 similar products side by side, such as 2 breakfast cereals or 2 pasta sauces, and keep the lighter 1 on your list.

Cook a little more often

Home cooked meals usually hold less fat, salt and sugar than ready meals and takeaways. You do not need to cook every night.

  • Batch cook 2 dishes on Sunday, such as a chilli and a vegetable soup.
  • Freeze single portions for the evenings you get home late.
  • Keep eggs, wholemeal bread and frozen vegetables in for quick meals.

Our page on light evening meals gives quick ideas.

Sleep is part of the plan

Short nights make you hungrier the next day and more drawn to sweet food. The NHS section on sleep and tiredness has self help tips. Regular bedtimes and less screen time late at night are free and need no equipment. More detail is in our guide to sleep and appetite.

Movement that is not exercise

Standing while you take a phone call, using the stairs, gardening, walking to the shop in Anlaby rather than driving. If your knees or back are sore, seated arm and leg movements still count. Keeping some muscle matters at every age, as our article on why muscle matters explains.

An easy habit before work

Willerby Nutrition opens from 7am to 11am, Monday to Friday, so members can stop for breakfast at the club on the way along the A164 or the A63, with daily follow-up from the coaches. No gym kit is needed, and the free assessment is the easiest way to begin. If pain or a health condition limits how you move, ask your GP or a physiotherapist for advice, since this article does not replace it.

Your own weight loss curve

Type in your profile and the line redraws immediately.

You are
Best range, 0.5 to 1 kg per week Too quick, so muscle is lost Median curve The journey, plateaus and regains

At the middle pace, 8 kg comes off in about 11 weeks. At the gentlest pace you are looking at about 4 months.

The usual guide for weight loss that lasts is between 500 g and 1 kg per week, which forms the best band on the chart. Keep exceeding 1 kg per week and the body burns muscle nearly as much as fat. That is the striped band.

A rough projection only. Everyone follows their own path and results differ. Your device does the sums and nothing is stored or sent. At 65 or older, see your doctor first.

The way this curve is worked out

The zone tops out at 500 g every week, the gentlest pace, and bottoms out at 1 kg every week, the level where the risk starts.

Early weeks go quicker, largely because of water, and then things level off. After 40, the typical curve flattens gradually as metabolism slows. For similar effort, men tend to shed weight slightly sooner than women.

The journey curve includes flat spells lasting several days and slight regains, just like everyday life. It cannot tell you how yours will go.

These tips are general ones. They do not stand in for medical advice.
